Getting here between classes
The main campus sits at SW 8th Street and SW 107th Avenue. Head east on SW 8th Street, turn south on SW 97th Avenue, and the academy is on Coral Way. It is a straight two-turn drive with no expressway, which means the trip is predictable even when the Palmetto is not.
A schedule that works around a course load
Classes run seven days a week, including early mornings before a first period and evening sessions late enough to make after a lab. Because there are multiple no-gi classes most days, a schedule that changes every semester does not mean starting over.
Why every class here is no-gi
No-gi grappling is the format closest to wrestling and MMA, which is usually what people picture when they imagine learning to grapple. There is no uniform to buy, the pace is faster, and the skills transfer directly if you ever want to try competition. Every class on our schedule is no-gi rather than an occasional alternative to a gi curriculum.
Training as a complete beginner
Plenty of people try grappling for the first time during university. You do not need a background in wrestling or martial arts, you do not need to buy a gi, and the first week is free. Beginners work in a foundations track before joining full live rounds.
Questions from FIU residents
How far is the gym from FIU?
Roughly ten minutes by car outside rush hour, straight east on SW 8th Street then south on SW 97th Avenue to Coral Way.
Can I train around an unpredictable class schedule?
Yes. There are no-gi classes most days in both the morning and the evening, so a semester schedule change does not force you to stop training.
Do I need experience to start?
No, and plenty of people start during university with no athletic background at all. New students train in a foundations track first. The first week is free, so trying it costs nothing but the drive.
What do I wear to my first class?
Athletic shorts with no pockets or zippers, plus a t-shirt or rashguard. There is no gi to buy, which keeps the cost of trying it close to zero.
